To be granted a student visa, Immigration New Zealand requires evidence of at least NZD $20,000 per year (roughly NZD $1,666 a month) in living funds, on top of tuition. That figure is a realistic planning number for rent, food, transport and essentials — Auckland is the most expensive city in the country, while centres like Hamilton and Dunedin cost noticeably less.Note: This is Immigration New Zealand's minimum proof-of-funds threshold, not a guaranteed budget — always check current figures at immigration.govt.nz before applying.

Auckland Transport runs an integrated network of buses, trains and ferries under a single AT HOP smartcard — tap on, tap off, one balance across every mode. Full-time students get concession fares once they register their HOP card, and the CBD, university precinct and inner suburbs are all comfortably walkable.

International students on a student visa must hold approved health insurance for the full length of their stay — this is a visa condition, not optional extra cover. With insurance in place, you can see a GP or a campus health service for everyday care, and New Zealand's public hospital system (Te Whatu Ora – Health New Zealand) provides emergency treatment.

Since 3 November 2025, eligible international students can work up to 25 hours a week during academic terms — up from the previous 20-hour limit — and full-time during scheduled breaks. It applies to full-time students studying towards a New Zealand qualification at NZQCF Level 4 or above for at least two academic years, among other categories. Students on an existing visa with the older 20-hour condition need a variation of conditions or a new visa to access the extra hours.Note: Students must be employed under a formal agreement — self-employment doesn't count toward eligible work hours. New Zealand is expanding its graduate work pathways from 16 November 2026. A brand-new Short-Term Graduate Work Visa (STGWV) will give graduates of NZQCF Level 5–7 qualifications — including diplomas like the NZDIT Technical Support — six months of open work rights, provided they studied full-time in New Zealand for at least 24 weeks and can show at least NZD $5,000 in funds. Separately, the standard Post Study Work Visa (PSWV) is being extended to graduates who complete a Level 7 Graduate Diploma while already holding a bachelor's degree, unlocking up to a year of open work rights.Note: These are newly announced settings, effective 16 November 2026.
