This qualification is designed for the students who wish to enhance their career opportunities in Hospitality.

A quality barista is the key ingredient to a successful café or restaurant. The hospitality industry is one of the fastest growing areas in the New Zealand economy. Hotels, bars, cafes and restaurants are keen to employ skilled baristas to provide excellent service. National Technology Institute’s Barista course gives candidates a comprehensive knowledge of barista skills. The course covers the history and evolution of coffee, espresso technology, and recipes requested in today’s café society. Students gain practical experience using a commercial espresso machine.

Students complete two NZQA unit standards:

17284 – Demonstrate Knowledge of Coffee Origin and Production
17288 – Prepare and Present Espresso Beverages for Service

Content & delivery

Students complete two NZQA unit standards:

17284 – Demonstrate Knowledge of Coffee Origin and Production
17288 – Prepare and Present Espresso Beverages for Service

Course covers coursebook, NZQA NSN (National Student Number) registration and materials used on the course such as coffee and milk.

Core learning will be delivered using a face to face learning approach and you will be encouraged to engage with your fellow students and tutor in the class. You will be supported throughout the process by our great facilitators who are professionally qualified and have industry experience to share with you.

On completion of this programme

The barista course prepares students to work as baristas in cafes and restaurants. Students will be able to:

  • Prepare quality espresso beverages
  • Understand how to make good coffee
  • Prepare and clean necessary equipment
  • Serve customers while practising proper etiquett

Entry requirements

To be eligible for admission into the programme, a candidate must have:

  • Aged 16 years or over
  • English at Intermediate level or higher

    Offer of Place will give advice on programme fees, insurance, date and methods of payment

  • 3 Pay fees

    Sign one copy of the Offer of Place and return it, with full payment of all fees, by the due date

  • 4 Fee receipt

    When we receive your fees, we will send you an official fee receipt

  • 5 Apply for visa

    Once your student visa is approved, we will arrange your accommodation (if you wish) and airport pick-up
