Our TESOL Programme is an introductory course for people who have little or no previous English language teaching experience. It may also be suitable for people with some experience but little previous training.

The programme is delivered by a range of qualified and experienced English language teachers and trainers.

The TESOL Programme consists of seven modules:

Module 1: Teachers and learners

Module 2: Language awareness and analysis

Module 3: Teaching receptive skills

Module 4: Teaching productive skills

Module 5: Lesson planning and classroom materials

Module 6: Classroom management

Module 7: Teaching practice

Outcomes

On completion of this programme students will demonstrate a developing understanding of:

Module 1: Teachers and learners

  • the various roles of the teacher
  • learner needs
  • learner characteristics (e.g. L1 vs L2 differences, learning styles, expectations, motivation)

Module 2: Language awareness and analysis

  • grammatical features, forms and functions
  • lexical features and forms
  • phonological features and forms

Module 3: Teaching receptive skills

  • text types and genre
  • different reading skills
  • different listening skills
  • interaction patterns

Module 4: Teaching productive skills

  • text types, functions and register
  • organisation and layout
  • interactive strategies
  • tasks for practicing fluency vs. accuracy

Module 5: Lesson planning and classroom materials

  • different components of a lesson plan
  • sequencing
  • presentation techniques and introduction activities
  • tasks for language and skill development
  • selection and use of resources

Module 6: Classroom management

  • techniques for grouping learners
  • techniques for monitoring learners
  • techniques for giving feedback
  • techniques for correcting learners

Module 7: Teaching practice

  • deliver an observed lesson
  • reflect on classroom delivery
  • participate in a feedback session on the observed lesson

Entry requirements

Students must:

  1. Be 18 years of age or older
  2. Have an IELTS score of 5.5 overall with a minimum of 5.5 in writing and speaking
